Conure

Loud, upside down, and living in your hoodie. Shirts for people who would not have it any other way.

If you live with one, you already know a conure is less a species than a personality type. Green cheeks, pineapples, suns and nandays all answer to the name, and every one of them is convinced it runs the house. Everything here is drawn for a specific bird, so you can get yours right.

Know your conure

  • The classic. Ten inches, maroon tail, grey head, and a strong preference for the inside of your sleeve.

  • A green cheek in different feathers. Warmer yellows and reds up front, same small tyrant underneath.

  • About twelve inches of impossible to miss and impossible to ignore.

  • Black face, green body, twelve inches of pure confidence. Also called the black-hooded parakeet.

Living with a conure

The bird picked you

Nobody plans to have their laptop screen colonised. Conures handle that part themselves. They ride shoulders, tunnel into hoodies, hang upside down off a curtain rail for reasons known only to them, and complain bitterly the moment you leave the room. For an animal that weighs about as much as a deck of cards, a green cheek occupies a remarkable amount of household space.

They are all conures and none of them are the same

This is where gift buying goes wrong. Conure is a keeper’s word rather than a scientific one, covering several different groups of New World parrots that ornithologists mostly file elsewhere.6 A green cheek and a sun are both conures roughly the way a terrier and a great dane are both dogs. Hand a green cheek owner a sun conure shirt and they will be very gracious about it, and they will absolutely notice.

Green comes in about eight flavours

Pineapple, yellow-sided, turquoise, cinnamon. Not separate birds. They are colour mutations of the green-cheeked conure, bred in captivity, so you get the same build and the same attitude wearing different feathers.10 When you are shopping for somebody else, the colour is the entire assignment.

This is a long arrangement

Green cheeks run about ten to fifteen years in the wild and comfortably longer in a good home.1 That is a bird you might take on in your twenties and still be negotiating with in your forties. Conure people tend to describe theirs the way other people describe a difficult but much loved relative, which is about right.

One of them needs help

The sun conure is the showstopper, all yellow and orange, and it is in real trouble. It is listed as Endangered, moved up from Least Concern after a steep decline driven largely by trapping for the pet trade.3 Most of the wild birds left sit in a small pocket of Guyana and northern Brazil, though there are early signs of recovery where trapping pressure has eased.

Conure questions

Is a conure a type of parrot?

Yes, and more than one type. Conure is a keeper's word rather than a scientific one, covering several groups of New World parrots including Aratinga, Pyrrhura, Eupsittula and Psittacara. They all come from Central or South America.

How long do conures live?

Longer than most people expect when they get one. Green cheeks live about ten to fifteen years in the wild and considerably longer in a good home. Plan for a housemate, not a phase.

What is the difference between a green cheek and a sun conure?

Size, color and volume. Green cheeks are around ten inches and mostly green with a maroon tail. Suns are bigger, bright yellow and orange, and considerably harder to ignore. Sun conures are also listed as Endangered in the wild, which green cheeks are not.

Is a pineapple conure a different bird?

No, and this catches a lot of gift buyers out. Pineapple is a color mutation of the green-cheeked conure, made by combining two other mutations. Same bird, different feathers.

How big do conures get?

Anywhere from about nine inches to eighteen, depending which one you mean. The painted conure is the small end at 22 centimeters and around 60 grams. The Patagonian is the large end at 45 centimeters and over 300 grams. The familiar pet species mostly sit between ten and twelve inches.
